Stu­dents Write About Their Role in the Community

A Year Of Dialog

The essays in this book­let were sub­mit­ted by stu­dents in grades
one through twelve as a result of an idea devel­oped by Dr. D. Floyd
Jones, Exec­u­tive Direc­tor of Youth Enrich­ment Ser­vices, Inc. (YES).
As he thought about his work with young peo­ple over the years, he
real­ized that they learned best when they played an active, rather
than a pas­sive role in address­ing prob­lems they expe­ri­enced in
their com­mu­nity. He also learned that, like most peo­ple, they
wanted to live in a pos­i­tive and nur­tur­ing com­mu­nity and were
will­ing to learn how to con­tribute to it. Fur­ther, he real­ized that they
had very spe­cific strate­gies and pref­er­ences that they wished to use
to strengthen their com­mu­nity and needed oppor­tu­ni­ties to voice
those ideas. As he and his daugh­ters reflected on the Dr. Mar­tin
Luther King, Jr. cel­e­bra­tions they had expe­ri­enced, he real­ized that
few if any of those cel­e­bra­tions focused on engag­ing chil­dren in
thought­ful reflec­tion about each of the six prin­ci­ples through
writ­ing and discussion.…
