Students Write About Their Role in the Community
A Year Of Dialog
The essays in this booklet were submitted by students in grades
one through twelve as a result of an idea developed by Dr. D. Floyd
Jones, Executive Director of Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. (YES).
As he thought about his work with young people over the years, he
realized that they learned best when they played an active, rather
than a passive role in addressing problems they experienced in
their community. He also learned that, like most people, they
wanted to live in a positive and nurturing community and were
willing to learn how to contribute to it. Further, he realized that they
had very specific strategies and preferences that they wished to use
to strengthen their community and needed opportunities to voice
those ideas. As he and his daughters reflected on the Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. celebrations they had experienced, he realized that
few if any of those celebrations focused on engaging children in
thoughtful reflection about each of the six principles through
writing and discussion.…
