Dennis Floyd Jones Ph.D (Executive Director)
During the past 10 years, Youth Enrichment Services has directed D2 for Allegheny County Juvenile Court. During this time, over 592 juvenile offenders that were remanded to YES have avoided incarceration at Shuman Center. Comparatively, this has been a savings to the Allegheny County Department of Human Services budget and to the citizens of Allegheny County in excess of $8,890,500. In addition, YES has served over 3,000 students in middle and high schools in various programs for the purpose of developing strong leadership character, academically enriched and culturally aware as well as mature, sensitive and responsible young children in and around Alleghany County. Dr. Jones has created several evidence based models that specifically address the youth’s emotional, social and cultural development, i.e., construct variables better known as self concept, locus of control, self determination, feelings of well-being, psychologically adjusted and confident in their abilities. These objectives are realized through the implementation of various model based programs, namely the in-home peer-mentor model, the PASS peer assistant study session, summer study for success, summer enrichment camp, summer team mentor certification and training program, sister circle, MH program and summer workforce success program. Each of these model based program are tested and evaluated as they are implemented within the scope of YES community based services. Dr. Jones uses these evidence based models to inform his practice as the YES program continues to evolve and remain a driving force and a relevant support structure that youth and families gain from participation. The aim of YES from its inception was to use the peer influence as a vehicle to help young people improve the quality of life, improve the quality of their family life and become independent success and thriving individuals. In essence, they become their own best resource to continue to adapt to changes in their lives, personally, socially, academically, spiritually and physically.
